NATIONAL XC RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT

Lewis in action
Despite having a lack of under 13 runners to put out multiple teams, the Calderglen Harrier Young Athletes returned to this annual event with a small and relatively new team at Cumbernauld for the 2013 National Cross Country Relays Championships. The 3 Young Harriers in action on Saturday 26th October were Calum & Lewis MacDonald and Drew Gordon.

Calum
The second race of the event was the Young Male athletes running the  2.5k course.  First up for the team was Calum MacDonald (under 13) in  his second cross country for the club. Calum repeated his good performance standard he did at the West Districts a few weeks ago and his debut on this difficult course he finished in 12:10, taking over was his brother Lewis MacDonald (under 15) who was running with difficulty as few weeks ago at the West Districts.  However that is all behind him and he put in a steady performance of 13:42 for his first time at Cumbernauld.  The final leg was ran by club stalwart Drew Gordon who is a second year under 15.  Drew ran the course in 12:41, a course PB by 22 seconds.  Total running time was 38:33.

Once again many thanks to the parents of the young athletes for supporting the club at this event.

LANARKSHIRE ROAD RELAY REPORT

Craig Stewart
Saturday 19th October we had 2 under 17 Boys representing the Harriers in the Lanarkshire 3 "A's" annual road relay in Drumpellier Country Park in Coatbridge. In this event the under 17's do an out & back 4k lap straight race however in their race there is a mixture runners as the senior men & women start their lap along side the under 17s.

Craig Stewart continues improving his form through more regular training and training with the seniors.  In a field of 12 age group runners Craig ran (17:25) and new recruit Derek Scott ran an enthusiastic (19:44).  Again like Craig, once Derek continues with regular senior training and with a few races throughout the season he will  create a good foundation to work on as a target for 2014 and beyond. More to come from both boys.

Derek Scott
Well done boys and keep up the hard work.  It is good to see young athletes progressing and into the senior Harriers.

WEST DISTRICT RELAY REPORT

The first cross country of the season we were greeted with sunny weather at Hamilton Park Racecourse. Its been 45 years since this venue was last used so it was new to us all and I must say its long overdue for its return.

We had 1 Young male team out with 2 new runners competing for the first time as Calderglen Harriers.  The first leg was under 13 new kid on the block Calum MacDonald who did the 2.5k route in a respectable 10.43.  Then big brother Lewis was our under 15 who took over with grit and enthusiasm however his lap didn't end well.  Lewis was struggling over the line with a recurring injury in 13.05.  The final honours for the last lap went to Craig Stewart now an under 17 training with the seniors.  Despite being one of the last runners to go he did his lap in 10.16 and managed to pull back a few places.

A big well done to the Harrier trio for racing for the club.  This is excellent experience for all 3 runners and good for their development as cross country runners.  They have all put a time down for the start of the season to test their early form and it is now up to them to attend all their training to keep being consistent as the season progresses.

Next race is the Lanarkshire AAA Road Relay on Saturday 19th October.  Only 2 people in the club have told me they want to race......where are the competitive runners? I need to know by Wednesday 16th October at training.
