RELAY FUN !

A wet and windy day was forecast for Calderglen Harriers annual Christmas Fun Run on Sunday 14th December 2014.  Back due to the success from last year, the fun run for the young athletes took the format of a relay race to encourage participation from all age groups. The response from the young athletes was overwhelming with 33 taking part beating 2013’s record entry of 28.

Despite a few call offs due to seasonal colds & flu’s, we had 11 teams comprising of 3 young athletes under the guise of festive names.  The teams were Crackers, Elves, Christmas Puddings, Snowmen, Turkeys, Reindeer, Stockings, Brussel Sprouts, Sleighbells, Stars and Carol Singers.

2014 contenders

As always to get into the festive spirit of the event it was gently encouraged for all to wear festive fancy dress and there was a wide range of runners with festive costumes on display.  We had Thing 1 & 2 from Dr Seuss’s Cat in The Hat, Santas, Christmas Hat & Jumper runners, Batgirl and Michael Jackson in Thriller guise. I grant you the later not particular festive but this adds more fun and variety to the race.  Each runner in their team ran 1 lap of the Christmas Handicap route covering 1.3k totalling each team running 3.9k. In old money that’s 0.8 miles per lap totalling 2.4 miles.

Last minute check of leg 2 runners!
First leg runner Rudi Jordan had the hard job of setting a sustainable winning pace, leg two runner Holly McAneny had the hard job of maintaining the lead that Rudi worked hard for and Emma Lawton had the third leg glory run leading the Reindeer’s to victory in a total time of 16:56. Congratulations to the 2014 winning team, Reindeers. That’s now 2 years in a row Holly has been in the winning team so an extra well done to Holly.  In second place was Christmas Puddings who were Sarah Dunn, Fergus Kane and Helen Anderson and third place was Snowmen who were Benjamin Fegan, Libby Currie and Haleigh Muir.
Two of the older junior Harriers took on the seniors and did the full 4 mile (6.5k) individual course which consisted of 5 laps. They were Marc McQuade and Emma Lawton who both did a lap in the junior relay so they actually both did 6 laps.  Again both young runners showed they more than capable of holding their own on this fun but tough event.  Emma finished in a solid 4th place out of 19 runners and lost out to 3rd place to her Dad Richard.  This is the only chance Richard has to beat Emma in a race.  Emma’s time of 27:21 was the fastest female of the day. Marc McQuade returned to this event zipping round the big ones in a great time of 29:58.  Well done to both.
A big thank you to all the parents for bringing their kids along and supporters who there to cheer them running in this winter weather.  It is really appreciated.  Official photos should be in the EK News in the coming week, courtesy of John McIntyre.
Merry Christmas
Richard

CHRISTMAS FUN RUN 2014

Christmas 2013 starter's on their marks!
On Sunday 14th December the Calderglen Harriers will be holding their annual Senior and Junior Christmas Fun Run so time to get thinking of a costume!  Previous years the costumes have been Santas, the Hulk, a Ghostbuster, Christmas fairy and even Nuns!

To remind folk and new members of this Harrier tradition.  Last year we introduced a a new format for the Junior section and did a Team Relay race which was a big hit.  We had record entry of 28 Juniors taking part which I am sure will be smashed this year.  How does it work?

Each team will cover 3 laps and I will mix the teams up.  The first team back will all get a medal. However all is not lost everyone will get a treat at the end and we have our our Secret Santa dip.  If everyone brings a small value prize up (max £5), those that bring a present then get to choose one in the lucky dip at the end.  Please wrap the present and make the present unisex - suit a boy or girl.
Race Details

Junior Harriers (Relay Team)

Starts at 10am, Run 3 laps per team (0.8 miles / 1.3k per lap), which is 2.4 miles or 3.8k

Senior Harriers (Individual race):

Starts at 11am, Run 5 laps (0.8 miles / 1.3k per lap), which is 4 miles or 6.4k

Hopefully some of the older more able junior runners will consider doing the 5 laps and challenge the "old" seniors.  Last year we had Marc McQuade & Emma Lawton giving it a go.  Marc finished second in 28:14 and Emma finished 6th in 27:06, 3rd fastest time of the event!

So please let me know if you can do the Junior or Senior run  ASAP and by Wednesday 10th December at the very latest. Alot of organising is required before hand to make this work!

As from previous years the race will be in cold conditions. So if you fancy joining us in this festive running event please come along in fancy dress (optional).

WET & WINDY IN LINWOOD

Unfortunately with no pictures to prove yesterday's West District Cross Championship was a very wet & windy day in Linwood Renfrewshire.  Going into the event we only had 7 athletes spread over the under 13 and under 15 age groups male and female but with call offs and injuries it was down to the trio of Lucy Saez (u13), Marc McQuade (u13) and Ross Cameron (u13).  They were left to battle against the other West District clubs in the wet and windy weather.

First up on the 3.2k course was Lucy Saez who committed to doing all the club races on a promise from her Dad Mark to get a fancy bag.  Lucy was happy with her performance as at the end she said there was a few runners who didn't complete the race.  Lucy's time of the day was 17:53.

Next up was the under 13 boys, Ross Cameron and Marc McQuade on the same 3.2k course.  Both athletes performed really well and didn't hold back.  Ross was the first Harrier home in 13:14 (with no xc spikes....Ross Christmas is round the corner hint hint) and Marc finished in 14:36.

Really proud of Lucy, Ross & Marc for competing for Calderglen Harriers, as it is all part of your training and helps the club to raise our profile as a competing club in the West of Scotland.

This is last district cross country of 2014 which leads on to the National XC  Championship in Falkirk in February. So lets see if we can get all the under 13s, 15s and 17s racing for Falkirk.  Now that would be a nice Christmas present for John and I....
